Breakdown
Go
Curerbell
is primarily singer / songwriter Kevin Jones from Llanelli south Wales,
playing
with a band as and when required.Various band members have been and
gone, but
Kevin remains and is determined to keep making great music! The
original line
up was Kevin and John Paul Zammit (who left the band to concentrate on
his
University studies).
Their first
venture into the studio was to record the first demo to be recorded by
Curerbell featured two songs: 'Nobody Gave Me Christmas Cards' and
'Origami
(Paper Cuts).'
Another
great demo followed soon after and was titled 'You Bring The Balloons.'
It
featured four great songs: 'Nobody Knows Everybody', 'Straw Man',
'Gem', and
'Confetti.' The EP was a limited edition, with only 300 copies made,
and
received rave reviews from those lucky enough to own a copy. South
Wales
Evening Post described it as being “on the cutting edge of
contemporary song
writing, superb". Following in the footsteps of welsh greats such as
Manic
Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals, and now filling the space that
Catatonia
left since 2001. In January 2002 Ashley Bowen from the Llanelli Star
wrote an article about this great EP on this welsh newspaper. She was
impressed by the beauty of the lyrics, of the voice of Kevin ( it
reminds her the voice of the singer of the Belgian band DEUS) and made
comparisons with REM, Travis, Coldplay, Sparklehorse and Starsailor.
But Curerbell has a specific touch, touching, catchy, a positive
melancoly which makes this band unique.
In 2002,
Curerbell were back in the studio. They recorded four tracks:
‘Waiting For The
World’, ‘There’s A Fire’,
‘Origami (Paper Cuts)’ and ‘I Could
Cry’. Aled
Richards from Catatonia, played drums for two of the songs.
Limited
edition and self-funded EP This Used To Be A Happy Place was recorded
in June
2005 working with producer Tim Hamill and drummer Aled Richards - of
former
welsh chart toppers Catatonia. Acts Curerbell have supported include:
David
Devant And His Spirit Wife, Jeff Klein, Fields and Hard-Fi.
Curerbells
last demo Waiting For The World was featured on BBC Radio Ones unsigned
website, getting praise from Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman. Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson
has also
expressed his fondness of Curerbells music. A so nice and rare music
that can make you cry with keeping smile...
Interview with Kevin Jones:
S: When
and how was Curerbell
born?
K:
1998, with a school
friend of mine John Paul Zammit, he wrote lyrics, I played the melodies
on
guitar, it took a while before we got any good and we didn't do much
untill 2000.
S:
Who are the persons behind the name of Curerbell ?
K:
John Paul came up with the name in late
2000, I've always liked it.
S: Where is
the name of the
band coming from?
K: It's a
secret, but you
could find out if you really wanted to...
S:
So you’re from Llanelli in Wales, can you say some words
about this
town, the places you like there or sites which “used to be a
happy place“ for
you?
K:
My homes have been happy places for me, growing
up in the 80s with just one supermarket, less cars on the road, no
mobile
phones...it was a better time years ago. I don't really have any
favourite
sites, the town right now is growing, lots of development going on
everywhere,
new shops, rugby stadium...
S: What are the positive and
negative sides of being a musician in Wales?
K: I can't
think of many
negatives, I suppose you have to travel to places like Cardiff and London to play
worthwhile gigs. Coming from Wales is a
positive as you have you're own
identity, and now of course you've got a list of successful bands to
inspire
you and follow on from...
S:
How many gigs have you ever done ?
K:
I've lost count, I've done a lot more
acoustic gigs on my own than with a full band, but altogether around 20
- 30
S:
As you played in California
recently, do you think public are
the same between UK and USA?
K:
I don't know, maybe not, but a lot do know
and like British bands like Muse, Snow Patrol, Coldplay etc...
S:
Do you feel anxious before a show ?
K:
Sometimes, not much, I just look forward to
playing and hope people like the songs and buy the cd!!
S:
How and when did all begin with music ?
K:
I used to have organ lessons as a child but
gave up, started playing guitar at 16, I've always liked pop music and
buying
music.
S: What
musicians or artists
had an influence in your life and in your work?
K:
Catatonia are my main
influence, I'd never heard a band with a sound like theirs before or
anyone who
sang like Cerys, their songs were so catchy and they came from Wales! Oasis
were an
influence, and have been a big influence on most bands these days.
But any good music and bands have been an influence over the years...
S:
Do you remember what was the first Cd you bought ?
K:
Maybe something like a 2 Unlimited cd! But
my first album was Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club in 1994. I'm
proud of
that.
S:
How could you define the music of Curerbell?
K:
It's always a question I don't like!!
Guitars, melody, choruses, good music...!!
S:
I feel in your music a special taste characterized by a
“positive melancholy”,
a rare and touching feeling I ever felt for the band Kent, do you think this feeling
can
exist?
K:
Yes!
S:
Do you agree with Victor Hugo who said :“Melancholy is the
pleasure of being sad” ?
K:
Yes I can agree
with that, I've written a lot of songs through being sad...
S:
When you write a song you follow your heart, your brain or your hand ?
K:
All three! Your heart for the melody, your
brain for the lyrics and your hands to play!
S: What is
your favourite
song of Curerbell and why?
K: Social
Melody I think,
it's upbeat, catchy, has a key change, my best guitar solo to date...I
like the
lyrics,if we ever
get to record an
album that will be re-recorded, as will most of
the songs I've recorded so far.
S: As a
musician, what’s
your feeling about internet?
K: It's
fantastic for
discovering music and buying music, and meeting other fans, and getting
gigs, and
selling cds or advertisng...but I don't agree with downloading music
for
free, people should still buy cds. Myspace.com is fantastic for hearing
music,
I've discovered so many good songs through that site.
S:
How many musical instruments can you play ?
K:
All guitar, but I can play keyboard a bit
too.
S:
Can you describe what is a typical Kevin’s day ?
K:
Boring, I work in an office (unfortunately!)
9 - 5 job, it's always busy and can be stressful dealing with the
public on
the phones. I don't really like my job, but it's something you have to
do.
I work 5 days a week.
S:
What are your hobbies aside music?
K:
I love going away to places like New York, LA, Chicago... football, rugby, I like old
80s stuff, horror films...
S: I know
Llanelli is famous for its rugby
tradition, did you play rugby, football, have you favourite team,
players, and
a special memory of a sport event?
K:
Most boys played rugby in school, it was
compulsory, I never liked it back then, I do now. The Scarlets are the
Llanelli
team, they're very good right now, haven't been to many matches, I
prefer to
watch on TV. There's a new stadium in the process of being built for
the
Scarlets. I used to play football constantly years ago, I was good too,
I still
play occasionally with friends. Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo for Manchester
Utd are
excellent players right now.
S:
Are you venturesome person?
K:
I'd say so, I am independant, I'm not afraid
to go places alone, travel, do different things, I've travelled to Birmingham and London on my own just to see bands I
like, played in LA and San Francisco last year alone...
S:
Where would you like to play in the future, is there a place in the
world you
would love to visit ?
K:
I'd like to see most of the world in
time...but I hold a special fondness for America, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco... I look forward to playing
anywhere I haven't already,Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Australia, Iceland, Japan!!
S:
Are there any things, which you are afraid of? Do you have any fears?
K:
Global Warming is on my mind a lot these
days, I fear that. People need to change.
S:
As my website is dedicated to Manics maybe can you say some words about
them,
when did you find out with them, songs which touched you the most ?
K:
I probably first heard them in 1993, saw a
video on tv, I was always aware of them but they made their big impact
with A
Design For Life and Everything Must Go, I first saw them play live in
1996 in Cardiff, Super Furry Animals and
Catatonia were the support acts! I've since
seen them play live around seven more times and I've been lucky enough
to
meet them on a few occasions, I gave James my cd as he passed me on a
street
in London! My favourite song would have
to be Motorcycle Emptiness. I'm
seeing them again in May when they play CardiffUniversity, quite a small gig.
S:
Aside Manics Wales gave us very good and pretty famous bands like
Catatonia, Feeder, Gorky's
Zygotic Mynci,
Stereophonics and
Super Furry Animals, what bands are not only in your blood but also in
your
heart?
K:
The non Welsh ones - The Sleepy Jackson,
Joseph Arthur, Sheryl Crow.
S:
Is Cerys Mattews from Llanelli or I’m mistaken?
K:
She went to school in Llanelli which is just
up the road from where I live now. Aled Richards who played drums in
Catatonia is from Llanelli and still lives here.
S:
Who “gave you last year a Christmas card” ?
K:
Ha! Just people in work, they don't mean
anything to me...
S:
I know it’s a difficult question, but if you would have to
keep just one album
from your Cd collection what album would it be ?
K:
Way Beyond Blue - Catatonia
S:
What was the last song you listened to before the interview? And, if
you know,
which one will be the next?
K:
Last song was Elvis by Kent, next one will be something by
Devics, I'm doing a compilation cd for someone at the moment...
S:
Can you tell me the title of one French song, or the name of one French
singer?
K: La
Ritournelle - Sebastien
Tellier
S:
And say one word in French ?
K: Bonjour!
J'mappele Kevin,
j'habbit Llanelli?? Merci!
The
boys always fancied our French teacher in school...she was such a
tease!!
S:
What are your plans for the nearest future ?
K:
I start practising soon with two new members
for Curerbell, then gigs in Cardiff, Bristol and London, and hopefully New York in October.
S:
And finally, what’s the most important thing in life for you?
